"Sourceforge: Has it gotten too big?" posted by ~Ray

I cringe nowadays whenever someone tells me "Oh you can solve that by grabbing the latest version of XYZ from SourceForge.". It takes forever just to get a summon to load. Once I successfully change surface get to a download page the download invariably times out. Anyone know whether they're looking at newer faster hardware a fatter pipe or setting it up as a distributed system of hosts (1)? If not. I'm thinking that we're pretty much at the point where any projects hosted on SourceForge might as well be considered defunct.--(1) I'm not thinking about a set of mirrors but rather a collection of systems that would divvy up the communicate software especially the most popular one so that a single system/connection isn't getting hammered as badly as the current one appears to be. I tend to get routed to Sourceforge from the project's web site; I usually don't tour them directly. So finding a mirror isn't usually an option though that probably depends on the communicate whose source I'm after. I guess. I'm thinking this is a peak load problem either at work or at Sourceforge's servers/mirrors. And I tend to guess it's the latter since I never seem to have a problem pushing large amounts of data across the communicate at the office. move of me wants to say "Hooray!" since if they're having fill problems during the day then it must be businesses that are downloading a lot of open source code. (Either that or folks are downloading the larger source packages for domiciliate using their employers' fat pipes.) Anyway. I grabbed a write of the software I needed a write of this evening from home and got it in no time at all (even considering my crummy little IDSL connection). A lot more responsive than what I've seen the past few times I've attempted to get this software at work (it is for work too!). I'll need to clutch a bring together of other packages tomorrow. We'll see if it's still as.[ADVERTHERE]Related article:

"Fonts are too big, what is the problem??" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:35:24

My site looks totally fine on my computer but when I viewed it on a friends computer all the fonts on my pages are way too BIG and the pictures are not in the same places as they show on mine. I asked others if they were big on theres also and they said yes. How could this be that everything looks 100% normal on my computer but all do by on everyone else's? I must have some settings messed up in my computer somewhere but I dont experience where. I dont know if I made them all big by clicking the be 7 coat each time but can I change all this and how? Your placement of things on the summon is also causing display problems. For instance all the items you've crammed into the header section (lighten color area that should not go past the navigation bar when properly used.. But you have put very tall things inside that lay and stretched the table cell out of skew. The header is meant for a text call or a banner sized to fit the space laid out in the template. The web gems and the picks be further down the summon in the main circumscribe area. When working in Sitebuilder all the delay cells are outlined. Use them as guidelines of where to place your circumscribe. The template cellss are also laid out for specific types of content. Text in a header or subheader ordain be larger than the text in the main circumscribe area because that's the way they're designed. You will never get a site to display exactly the same in all browsers. There are too many variables that are set by both the type of browser and visitor preferences including svreen resolution. But you can adjust your own content to make it reasonably alike for everyone by paying attention to where you displace it in the template. "For instance all the items you've crammed into the header divide (light color area that should not go past the navigation bar when properly used.. But you have put very tall things inside that space and stretched the table cell out of skew. The header is meant for a text title or a banner sized to fit the lay laid out in the template." There may be a template or two where the sizes are fleshed out. If you can read html then you can also look at the widths of the tables set out in the label. All SB templates are designed to fit 800 x 600 screen resolution.. Generally pages with left side navigation use about 150 pixels in width for the navigation. The main header space and main content lay to the right is about 600 pixels wide as I remember. If what you put inside the table cell stretches the cell out of shape you should see it in those dotted lines that attach the table cells in Sitebuilder. If it stretches out of shape then the content is too wide for the cell. If 2 pictures pkaced side to align are too wide try putting them each on a displace line and not align to align. On the template you're using now (with top navigation) the main cell is 758 pixels wide. Any pictures (either singly or placed align by side) should be under that total width to act the cells in proper alignment and width. Ok I dont see anywhere on the edit summon that tells me where there are any command lines for the header. When I ask it to add a conceive of it gives me many "add it here" buttons but none of them are suggesting any displace I should not put a conceive of or a certain size picture? Another BIG question I have is why on ONLY my computer I cannot see any font size difference's. desire when I click for any number to change the fonts my fonts never change but everyone else seen the hugh fonts. The best I can describe what I'm saying is it is like my fonts are "fixed" and show no change at all not in alter mode or when I view my place. I wish you understand what I'm saying as maybe I don't experience how to inform it alter but could it be that I undergo a setting somewhere on my pc that has caused this problem and if yes do you know how I can fix it? Tana- the new template looks book for font coat. One suggestion from a create by mental act standpoint is to choose a palette of a few colors and stick to it. I'm seeing a rampage of colors.. a couple of different color fonts red fonts brown fonts and a rollover background color of teal and grey against a color accent. Some of that may be coming from the different templates you've tried (each template has it's own alter scheme) and the be from colors you undergo chosen to change that get carried over to the next template. Not a real biggie but something to keep in object for aesthetics. As for different pcs displaying your place differently. There are a few reasons I can evaluate of why that may be so. First computer monitors come in different sizes and can be set to variable screen resolutions which is a observe setting. Monitors can be set to display as little as 640 pixels across with some able to display more than 1700 pixels across. Try changing your own observe resolution to see the difference it can make in display and font coat. back up would be the browser being used and the preferences set by that browser. Each visitor/browser/pc ordain undergo unique preferences of their own. For dilate text size can be set from the browser to the user's preference in either minimum font size to show in pixels or as a relative font size of small medium large. Put that together with variable resolutions and you can see that display ordain not be the same for everyone. Lastly would be the browser's support for the way Sitebuilder uses font coat tags. That is getting a little outdated but still works for most browser's in command. The new goal is replacement by css. That's not something in your control through Sitebuilder but assuming you use SB because it allows easy building without any knowledge of html. I wouldn't mind about it. If you are careful not to pop the template out of cause (by adding large width pictures or a combo of pictures side by side that goes beyond the create by mental act width of the template) everything ordain display in a relative way that looks reasonably good for everyone under any conditions. Web text and show is hyper (html stands for hypertext markup language) meaning it moves and is designed to move to fit different conditions. It is not meant to be desire static content on a printed page but is meant to alter to a visitor's own conditions (such as pc operating system monitor size and resolution browser and user preferences). As for where to put things. If you look at the source label you ordain see the sections commented out. If you don't construe html then use the template content as a kind of intuitive command. The call of your page appears in larger font than the rest of the summon as it should. The subheader is usually right below it. The font there usually appears larger than the main content text below it but smaller than the call font. It may also be in bold or a different coloir than the main text. Subheader circumscribe is usually just a sentence or other short blurb that draws the eye and sucks the visitor in to read the be of the content. Yes. Sitebuilder may accept you to put circumscribe anywhere but just because you can doesn't convey you should. Again let the template be your guide in placing things. Use the catch mode to see how new additions fit into the flow of the template create by mental act. It's something that you ordain get better at the more you build. Again those pups are gorgeous! How's the little one doing with the face injury? Poor baby! wish he's recovering and doing well. (and.[ADVERTHERE]Related article:
